December 1, 1998                                                                                  Vol. 1, No. 3

HOLIDAY STRESS: As Thanksgiving and the December holidays roll along, take some time out for yourself. You the eldercaregiver need some time to rest and reflect on the year, your challenges and the things that matter to you personally. Mike Moldeven, a community member, has posted his grief and bereavement support tips in the ElderCare Forum. Take a look at them and share your comments with other community members. http://www.ec-online.net/Community/communit.htm

ELDERCARE ORGANIZER: Version 1.0 of the ElderCare Organizer is now available free to all community members. This helpful software download allows you to pull together key pieces of information on the elder you are taking care of. Use it if you need to quickly track down contact information for an advisor or locate a specific document in the event of an emergency. It includes sections that help you track personal information, legal and financial documents, insurance policies, car and home information, and other important topics. Similar organizers sell for $35 or more.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: The ElderCare Forum is already making a difference in the lives of caregivers. One recent visitor was able to use the discussion board to get valuable information that she used to start a Family Council at her father’s nursing home. Family Councils can make a vest difference in the quality of life of nursing home residents. If your role as a caregiver has shifted to that of an advocate for your elder in an extended care facility, you can continue to ensure that your elder receives the best social services and medical care possible. http://www.ec-online.net/Community/communit.htm

ELDER LAW MADE EASY: The Legal & Financial Matters KnowledgeBase is filling up rapidly with valuable information. Our recent additions include "ElderLaw Basics" and the "Personal Affairs Checklist." Both of these helpful articles will get you on a solid footing in making sure that your elder’s affairs are in order. Use them in conjunction with the ElderCare Organizer to ease the hassles of managing someone’s legal and financial matters: http://www.ec-online.net/Knowledge/knowlegal.htm.

This 16-page guide covers the range of legal, medical and insurance terms that you may encounter while caring for an aged loved one. It is available free to community members.
