Barbara Bridges, RN, MSN, MSHCM, MBA, the author of "Therapeutic Caregiving: A Practical Guide for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Causing Diseases," brings over 35 years of nursing experience and a great deal of compassion for the elderly to eldercare on line chat sessions. Barbara spent 14 years caring for parents with dementing illness caused by Alzheimer's disease and strokes. Ms. Bridges' therapeutic caregiving (TM) techniques emanate from her philosophy and belief that our aging loved ones deserve to have kind and nurturing care which enhances physical and mental functioning and fosters independence and a meaningful quality of life. TAX TIME: It’s two weeks until Tax Day, April 15! If you have not yet completed your taxes or your elder’s taxes, please take a look at the online tax forms and tax tips on the website. You can download, forms, instructions and publications from http://www.ec-online.net/Assistants/download.htm. Congratulations to Don Y. of Davidsonville, Md. who won the complimentary Ernst & Young Tax Guides.

NEW MEDICAID RULES: Current Medicaid recipients can no longer be evicted from nursing homes, even if the nursing home stops receiving Medicaid payments from the government under a new law signed by President Clinton. Previously, patients could be evicted with 30 days notice. The law does not require nursing homes to admit Medicaid patients or to participate in the program. However, homes that do not participate must clearly inform incoming residents that they face possible eviction if they transfer or end up relying on Medicaid if they run out of their own funds. For more about Medicaid and long-term care rules, visit the government site at http://www.medicaid.com.

QUESTIONS ABOUT PRESCRIPTION DRUGS: I frequently get questions about prescription drugs, especially the new Alzheimer’s drug, Aricept. I have arranged free access to a site that offers information on drugs to ElderCare Online members. RxList provides detailed information on drug descriptions, dosages, interactions, warnings, side effects, patient information and precautions. I hope that you find this site useful and a guide to safer medication and better health and wellness. You can access the site from the Longevity & Wellness KnowledgeBase at http://www.ec-online.net/Knowledge/knowlongwell.htm.

PASSAGE TO PARADISE: This month we welcome a new site to our Members HomePages – Passage to Paradise. Dorothy Womack has created a special site dedicated to the memory of her mother, Vivian H. Hanby, who passed after years with Alzheimer’s Disease. Dorothy has taken the last two years to cope with her feelings after 14 years of caregiving. I am sure you will find yourself somewhere amid the pages of this book. You will find information that will amuse, sadden, enlighten, comfort, confuse, and even awe you. Some will be shocked by the intensity of her feelings and thoughts. Others will find solace in knowing that you are not alone, nor are you crazy - you are reacting very normally, given your extremely stressful situation. Please visit her site at http://www.ec-online.net/Community/members.htm and draw strength and inspiration from her experiences. Dorothy also manages a ListServ mailing list for 24-hour support for caregivers.
